Maritza is a 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist in swimming. She is the 1st woman of color to make the US Olympic Swim team and medal. She was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, then moved with her family to Florida when she was 9 years old. She attended the University of Georgia at age 17. She graduated in 2005 as a 27-time All American with 11 NCAA titles. She became the first woman of color to break an individual American record and a World Record. After college she turned pro and traveled the country representing Team USA until her retirement. She's clocked 20 years in the USA Swimming World. Now, she works full time in corporate America, raising two kids with her husband. She travels the country spreading the importance of learning to swim especially in the Black communities. She describes her journey as hectic, fun, exhausting, and rewarding all at the same time.
